Running for Tubbataha
MARCH 16, 2008 | SUNDAY | INQUIRER.NET
MANILA, Philippines - Louie Prieto would have been 46 today. My elder brother tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident 15 years ago. Even if time heals the pain of losing a loved one, the sentimental feeling of absence will never go away. When the family remembers him on special occasions, I can’t help but shed happy tears for my fun-loving brother.
As we approach the culmination of Lent, we reflect on the importance of life and the true meaning of our existence. Louie died at the prime age of 31, with so much left to accomplish, and yet what little time he spent with us, he did by always living life to the fullest.

SINGAPORE -- The Department of Energy (DOE) said Friday that oil exploration firm Burgundy Global Exploration Corp. is willing to exclude the Tubbataha Reefs National Marine Park from oil and gas exploration.
The announcement was made in response to calls from the park management to exclude over 15,000 hectares of the marine park.
The said area overlaps with petroleum service contract 61, which was awarded to Burgundy in July 2006, allowing it to conduct exploration activities in the concession area.

MARCH 7, 2008 | TUESDAY | INQUIRER.NET
The Manila city council passed a resolution on Thursday urging Filipinos to vote online for the Tubbataha Reef in Palawan as one of the "New Seven Wonders of Nature." According to District 2 Councilor Numero Lim, author of the resolution, it is time for Filipinos all over the world to use their Internet skills to vote at www.new7wonders.com for the benefit of the country.
"We Filipinos love to vote, that's why in beauty pageants like Miss Universe we usually win the Miss Photogenic award. So why not make our votes count in something [that] can help to promote the Philippines?" he said. The Tubbataha Reef in the Sulu Sea is a "unique example of an atoll reef with a very high density of marine species," according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), which placed the protected sanctuary in its World Heritage list.
